Church Stones in Otava (Nature, natural sites and attractions, Retkeilyreitit ja luontopolut)

The huge boulders known as Church Stones (literal translation from Finnish) are located in Otava, Mikkeli. 12 and 18 meters high rocks are over 10,000 years old, and since 1992 they have been preserved by Nature conservation act.

The name of the stones is believed to originate from their unusual shape that resembles church hall. According to the local tradition, the stones were used as a sacrificial spot during the pagan times. The caves between the stones also provided shelter to locals during the Cudgel War.

Official camp fire and guestbook are provided for visitors. Firewood is also available.

The easiest way to the Church Stones from Mikkeli is along the Lahdentie Road. Take the exit 22 to Tikkalantie Road. From there, follow the signposts about 6 kilometers. From the parking lot, take approximately kilometer long footpath to the Church Stones.
