Alley of black alders in Hirvensalmi was born, when the water level in lake Puula was artificially lowered in 1850s. The alley travels across Hirvensalmi population center near the shore of lake Liekune.
Being a rare sight in Finland, black alders of Hirvensalmi have their special place in Hirvensalmi life. Named after the alley, the annual Black Alder Festival of Hirvensalmi is held in the beginning of July.
